Considering Joining the Teal Diva Board of Directors or a Committee?

Thank you for your interest in helping women and families affected by gynecologic cancers.

Many of our Board and Committee members were inspired to get involved by a loved one impacted by cancer, while others are survivors who bring valuable firsthand perspective to our mission. Together, our volunteers and leaders advance Teal Diva through advocacy, fundraising, community engagement, and service.

Whether you’re interested in joining a committee, serving on the Board, or simply exploring ways to get involved, Teal Diva offers meaningful opportunities to make a difference.

Below are answers to frequently asked questions about committee and Board service. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, we’d be happy to connect and answer your questions.

What does the Teal Diva Board and Committees do?

The Board of Directors helps guide the organization’s mission, strategy, fundraising, and community impact while ensuring Teal Diva remains financially healthy and mission-focused.

Who serves on the Teal Diva Board/Committees?

Our Board includes survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, community leaders, business professionals, and individuals who have been personally impacted by gynecologic cancers. What unites us is a shared passion for supporting women and families in our community.

What is the difference between a Board Member and a Committee Member?

Both Board Members and Committee Members play important roles in advancing Teal Diva’s mission, but their responsibilities and commitments differ.

Board Members provide organizational leadership and governance. They help set strategic direction, oversee the financial health of the organization, support fundraising efforts, serve as ambassadors for Teal Diva, and vote on key organizational decisions. Board Members serve on at least one committee and attend quarterly Board meetings.

Committee Members focus on specific areas of the organization’s work, such as fundraising, development, events, governance, marketing, or community engagement. Committee Members attend monthly committee meetings, contribute their skills and expertise, and help implement initiatives that support Teal Diva’s mission.

Many individuals begin their involvement as Committee Members before pursuing Board service, making committee participation a great way to learn more about the organization and deepen your impact.

Do I need previous nonprofit board experience?

No. While nonprofit experience is helpful, it is not required. We welcome individuals who are committed to our mission and willing to actively contribute their time, talents, and ideas.

Do I need to have a personal connection to gynecologic cancer?

No. Many Board members have a personal connection, but others joined simply because they believe in the mission and want to make a difference.

What are the expectations of Board and Committee members?

Both Board and Committee Members are expected to be active ambassadors for Teal Diva and support our mission of serving women and families affected by gynecologic cancers.

Board Members are expected to:

  • Attend quarterly Board meetings
  • Serve on at least one committee and participate in monthly committee meetings
  • Support fundraising, sponsorship, and community engagement efforts
  • Contribute their skills, expertise, and professional networks
  • Help provide strategic direction and organizational oversight
  • Make a meaningful annual contribution through personal giving, fundraising, sponsorships, volunteer service, or other mission-supporting activities

Committee Members are expected to:

  • Attend monthly committee meetings
  • Actively participate in committee projects and initiatives
  • Share their skills, expertise, and ideas to help advance committee goals
  • Support Teal Diva events, fundraising efforts, and community outreach when possible
  • Serve as ambassadors for the organization within the community

Both roles offer meaningful opportunities to make an impact, and many of our Board Members began their journey as Committee Members.

How much time does Board/Committee service require?

Board members typically commit approximately 3-6 hours per month, including meetings, committee work, events, and occasional volunteer activities.

How often does the Board/Committees meet?

The Board of Directors meets quarterly, while committee meetings are held monthly to support ongoing initiatives and organizational goals.

How long is Board/Committee service term/commitment?

Teal Diva Board members serve a two or three year term and may be reappointed for additional terms based on mutual interest, continued engagement, and Board approval.

At the end of each term, Board members have the opportunity to:

  • Renew their commitment and continue serving.
  • Transition to a committee role if their availability has changed.
  • Conclude their Board service while remaining involved as a volunteer or supporter.

We understand that life circumstances change, and we strive to create leadership opportunities that are both meaningful and sustainable. Our goal is to build a committed, engaged Board while providing flexibility for volunteers to stay involved in ways that fit their lives.

Are virtual meetings available?

Yes. Most meetings can be attended virtually, allowing members to stay engaged regardless of location or schedule constraints.

Is there a financial contribution/give/get expectation for Board members?

Board members are expected to make a meaningful annual contribution to Teal Diva’s mission. We recognize that contributions can take many forms, including personal giving, sponsorships secured, donations raised, in-kind support, volunteer hours, and leveraging professional expertise or community connections. We believe every Board member should be invested in the success of our organization and contribute in a way that reflects their capacity and strengths. Review Teal Diva’s give/get policy.

Not Sure if Board Service Is Right for You?

That’s okay! Many of our volunteers start by serving on a committee before deciding whether Board service is the right fit.

Committee members play an important role in advancing Teal Diva’s mission through fundraising, community engagement, events, governance, and strategic initiatives. It’s a great way to learn more about our organization, meet current Board members, and make a meaningful impact.

If you’re interested in getting involved but aren’t ready to commit to Board service, we’d love to talk with you about committee opportunities.

Why do people join the Teal Diva Committees/Board?

People join for many reasons—some to honor a loved one, some because they are survivors themselves, and others because they want to use their skills to create meaningful change. No matter the reason, Board members share a commitment to ensuring women affected by gynecologic cancers receive support, hope, and connection.

That last question is especially powerful because it reinforces the emotional “why” right before someone decides whether to fill out the interest form.
