Today on the Teal Diva blog we have such a treat for you! We are sharing creative and artist Shannon's story. She was kind enough to let us into her world and how creating art helped her in her personal recovery and now how she shares love and art with those around her. Although Shannon isn't a cancer survivor she is an eating disorder survivor and has Chronic Kidney Disease stage 4 and will need to start dialysis soon and a kidney transplant in the future. Her chosen medium is watercolor paper with markers. Read on to hear about this awesome journey and ministry.

My therapist told me to do some art and bring it to our sessions because I had a hard time opening up. The art helped and it went crazy after that.

I do art as therapy for me and to bless others. It’s my little ministry that I have started about 3 years ago. While I was at ERC in Denver, Colorado for inpatient care for my eating disorder. I was there inpatient for about 3 weeks and that is where I started doing art for others. I started giving my art out to other patients so they could hang something positive on their walls. Then, when I left ERC I went to an out patient program and started to draw for others and pass them out daily. Now, it has been over 3 years and I have done over 1,651 pieces of art to help spread God’s love and encouragement to others. I try to do one art piece a day and I give it away to someone on Facebook, at the store or wherever I go.

I connect with others that have eating disorders or anyone that is hurting in some way. I try to connect to anyone that would like some art. I will search on Facebook and ask others if I can make them some art. I do many art pieces in remembrance of loved ones for people. Like their loved ones favorite quote, colors, and something that is memorable for them. I do help some organizations that pass out my art to others that might need some love and encouragement. I go to Baptist cancer center to get my B-12 shot and another shot to help with my red blood cells every four weeks I try to take the nurses some art and they pass them out to other patients that are there that day. I also have been teaming up with another ministry that is taking my art to prisons to pass out so they can put them in their cells. I will give my art to anyone that God points in my direction. It’s all to help spread His love and encouragement to others.

I do all my art free. I do not charge anyone for anything and I will ship it to your door all free. I do get some of my people that will go to my Amazon wish list and send me art supplies to help. I also have some people that will donate money to help with the shipping. I NEVER ask for anything except to let me know when or if you receive your art. I write everyone’s name down and what I made them in a book so I can go back and look at it if I need some encouragement for myself.

This picture is when Shannon made some art for an organization, Sista2sista in Memphis, Tn. This organization is a drop in center for women that are struggling with drugs and prostitution trying to get off the streets. One of her favorite organizations to work with.

Shannon taking art to the post office (usually weekly) to send to others. She is wearing her favorite sweatshirt with Bible verse Joshua 1:9 "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
